David Robertson (First Nations, Canada, British Columbia, Kwakwaka'wakw / Kwakiutl, 1943 to present), ca. late 20th century CE, "Raven." This is a fine hand-carved decorative carving of a raven head, a venerated totemic bird, trickster spirit, and clan emblem of many First Nations people. The face presents huge ovoid eyes surrounded by thick green and red lids that are slightly recessed below a thick black brow. The tapered, blade-like beak has a pointed tip with geometric red and black carvings before the large black nostril. The upper edge of the head has a slit in the wood that the raffia crest fits into, and the longer strips dangle down the back of the head. The flat verso is signed by the artist and engraved with his initials. A wire and staple hook are attached to the verso for suspension and is ready to display!
