Description
(1733 - 1810) Continental Army major general who commanded in the South, was captured at Charleston and later exchanged. Formally accepted the British surrender at Yorktown as Washington's second in command and was a Secretary of War. Partly-printed D.S. 'B. Lincoln' as Customs Collector of the Port of Boston, 1p. oblong 8vo., Boston, April 8, 1805, certifying the import of one hogshead, or thirty-one gallons, of claret from the 'Shipwright Doak', an American vessel from Bordeaux. Co-signed by THOMAS MELVILL (1751 - 1832) Sons of Liberty member, participant in the Boston Tea Party, grandfather of author Herman Melville, as Inspector of the Port. Fine condition.
