This 1988 painting is created during a period of artistic revitalization. Until the end of the 1980s, Philippe Vandenberg produces lyrical-abstract works. But the upheavals in world politics and dissatisfaction with the recuperation of his work by the art market lead to a radical reorientation of his practice. With paintings inspired by the imagery of capitalism, street culture and cartoons, he addresses the consequences of the human thirst for power and money. This painting, with references to cartoonlike figures in a colorful palette, is part of the impetus for this series of works.

Dit schilderij uit 1988 kwam tot stand tijdens een periode van artistieke herbronning. Tot het einde van de jaren ‘80 maakte Philippe Vandenberg lyrisch-abstracte werken. Maar de omwentelingen in de wereldpolitiek en onvrede met de recuperatie van zijn werk door de kunstmarkt leidden tot een radicale heroriëntatie op zijn praktijk. Met schilderijen geïnspireerd door de beeldtaal van het kapitalisme, de straatcultuur en cartoons, kaartte hij de consequenties van de menselijke zucht naar macht en geld aan. Dit schilderij met cartooneske figuren in een kleurrijk palet, vormt mee de aanloop tot deze reeks werken.
