SAMUEL JONES JR. (1769-1853). American Lawyer and Politician from New York, Chief Justice of the Superior Court of New York City.
March 22, 1820-Dated, Autograph Letter Signed, "S. Jones", 8" x 10", 1 page, Albany, Very Fine. Jones writes to Ogden Edwards, NY Chief Justice, reading in part: "I sent by post mail an order of the court for you to answer our Petition of Appeal in the cause of Herman LeRoy and others as the Mayor Alderman and Comonality of New York...". Samuel Jones, Jr. (1769-1853). He was the son of Samuel Jones (1734-1819) who served as Comptroller and Recorder for the City of New York. He graduated from Yale in 1790 and from Columbia in 1793. He studied law in his father's office, where DeWitt Clinton was also a student. He served in the New York State Assembly from 1812 to 1814. He was Recorder of the City of New York from 1823 to 1824.
In 1826 he replaced Nathan Sanford as Chancellor of the State serving until 1828 when he became Chief Justice of the Superior Court of New York City. Along with his father, Samuel Jones Sr., he was known as the "Father of the New York Bar".
