She began teaching art at the university in 1942 and became a professor in art education until her retirement in 1979. Mary, married fellow university Modernist artist Lou Block of New York during her tenure at the university. After retirement, Nay moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts where she continued her work in the Art Association and Museum as well as the Heritage museum. Mary Spencer Nay's works can be found in numerous regional collections, as well as the J.B. Speed art museum of Louisville in which held a retrospective exhibition of her work in 1976.
