Description
Egypt, Late Period 6th-1st cent. B.C. or earlier (?).Wood. L. 6.3 cmMongoose-like animal with small head, blunt snout, an elongated but rounded body, short legs with elongated paws and a long, narrow tail. Reminiscent of the Ichneumon, which is revered in the Egyptian culture. Unusual or atypical for this, however, the long, pointed ears, which are close to the head and neck and are more reminiscent of a jackal in their shape, as well as the rounded body that reminds one of a mouse. Front paws lost.With Christie's London, 25 April 2007, lot 56 with provenance "Acquired in Egypt between 1956 and 1958. Sold to benefit The Hand Goedicke Foundation for Egyptology."
