Description
117 Renaissance Revival Minton Tiles, ca. 1885. Comprising 41 tiles now applied to a wood board used to make the over mantel image of two leopards facing brackets enclosing two tiles with the image of Hephestus as a child making fire, all on a black and grey tesserated background, with scrolls, circular flourishes, etc. Also, roughly 50 black glazed tiles of rectangular and triangular form; several additional tiles removed from the borders and edging of this main image; and two tiles of larger rectangular form, moulded in low relief with women standing in period dress, carrying children in basket or birdcage, in pale ocher glazed enamel. Also, several broken tiles, moulded in low relief with oak leaf sprays withing circles, treacle glazed.; and six tiles with Gothic flourishes, black and orange enamel. MINTON STOKE ON TRENT Stoke on Trent, England. Circa 1890. {Approximate dimensions: the main image, 25 x 61 inches. The two large tiles 6 5/8" x 16 1/2" x 7/8". Gift of The de Young Family. The tiles applied to the wood board are in good condition. The two large tiles have rubbing, discoloration and losses to long edges. The oak leaf spray tiles are in moderate condition. All of the tiles have been used and then removed from the original De Young room.
