Description
by Jacob Dutweiler Wagner (1852-1898) pastel on paper, 29 x 24 inches, framed. Note: Charles Greely Loring is the brother of Caleb William Loring. He was a graduate of the scientific school at Harvard and was appointed under General Burnside during the Civil War ultimately achieving the rank of colonel and received numerous commendations. His first gift in 1872 to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston was a collection of antiquities from Egypt known as the Way Collection. Loring was an expert in Egypt after visiting and becoming a student of its culture. After volunteering to arrange and catalog the collection he was appointed curator in 1876 and director in 1887.
