In 1964 Associated American Artists in collaboration with the estate of Lyonel Feininger printed 12 woodcuts by the artist. The blocks chosen were never printed in a formal edition by the artist and exist in lifetime impressions in proofs only.
Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) was born in New York City on July 17, 1871. His father was a violinist and composer, his mother a singer. At the age of sixteen he traveled to Germany to study at Konigliche Akademie and other art schools in Berlin. He initially worked as a caricaturist and at the age of thirty six started a career as a fine artist. He produced a remarkable body of paintings, drawings and prints. His first solo exhibition was at Sturm Gallery in Berlin in 1917. He was hired by Walter Gropius of the Bauhaus in 1919 as the first teacher in the printmaking workshop.
