Description
1851 Native American Indian Tribes Wars Red Race Chiefs Oneota Henry Schoolcraft

“the most reliable observations that had been made among various tribes…pertaining to almost every field of American ethnology.” (Larned)

Henry Rowe Schoolcraft was an early American ethnologist and expert on Native American culture. He was well-known for his Congress-commissioned study on United States Indian tribes beginning in 1851. The content of this work was considered valuable scholarship by critics and included accurate illustrations by Eastman. Leading up to this study, Schoolcraft published “Oneota, Characteristics of the Red Race of America” in 1845, a work which was later published under the title “The American Tribes”.

Schoolcrafts studies on Indians are considered the most extensive works on Native Americans published in the 19th-century, and, according to Field contain

“a vast mass of really valuable information and has indeed performed a very important service for Indian history, in collecting and preserving an immense amount of historic data. Vocabularies of Indian languages, grammatical analyses, legends of various tribes, biographies of chiefs and warriors, narratives of captivities, histories of Indian wars, emigrations, and theories of their origin, are all related and blended in an extraordinary manner.”
