Item Details
Description
Dondolo designed by Leonardi and Franca Stagi one evening in 1965. Made of white fiberglass. The curve of the unique line that makes up the chair offers a profile that is both serpentine and calligraphic. The appeal of this Dondolo chair has much to do with the figure it makes in a room and the experience it provokes in anyone who sits in it. Beginning with the cantilevered seat, its line continues in an almost theatrical fold, which as it passes underneath the seat turns into the proper rocking part of the chair. An extrusion of that line defines the Dondolo chair as an effectively three-dimensional form. Its structural integrity is determined by a series of ribs that take up the profile of the chair, acting as perpendicular reinforcements, supporting a suspended seat and the swinging movement obtained when the person sitting on it shifts his weight towards the footrest. Since the chair has no armrests to aid in the movement, shifting the weight towards the end of the footrest is crucial to the movement of the chair. According to Cesare Leonardi's daughter, the Dondolo was designed by Leonardi and Franca Stagi one evening in 1965. The unusual chair was then reworked between 1966 and 1967, and the prototype was financed by Bernini in 1967 and 1968. Finally, the chair produced in three colors, made of polyester resin and reinforced by fiberglass was presented at the Milan Furniture Fair in 1969. Bernini retired in 1970 and the production of the Dondolo chair was continued by the Fiarm branch of the Bellato firm until 1975, but overall only between 15 and 20 pieces were produced. Nonetheless, the Dondolo has remained the only example in which structurally manipulated fiberglass has produced an object capable of capturing the spirit of the mid-1960s during which, along with other aspects of Western culture, the relationship with the environment was also vibrantly challenged.
