BIOGRAPHY:
She was born Sept. 12, 1915, in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. She earned her bachelor's degree in art and education from Ohio University. In the 1930s, she started the high school art program in the Eaton schools and also had elementary classes. It was in Eaton where she met her husband, Harold Vorhees, who died in 2003.Her husband's career with Mobil Oil took them to St. Louis, Kansas City and Chicago, and overseas to Geneva and London, where she continued to teach privately and resumed painting on a more full-time basis. The couple moved to Albuquerque in 1975, where she became a well-known watercolor artist and teacher.Mrs. Vorhees exhibited and judged the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Show, Southwest Arts, Weems Artfest and the New Mexico State Fair, receiving many awards over the years. She was a charter and signatory member of the New Mexico Watercolor Society and of the National League of American Pen Women.She Made a classic Mid Century Modern looking painting that makes any viewer think about what they are looking at.After moving to Albuquerque in 1975, Vorhees became a well-known watercolorist and teacher. Watercolor artist Dorothy Lawrey Vorhees was passionate about art, whether she was immersed in her own work, teaching novice painters or lobbying to support the arts.
