Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 CE. A fabulous, musical whistling vessel comprised of 2 discoid vessels atop conical feet, all intricately painted with black and white pigments. A lengthy, tapered spout rises from the top of one chamber and is attached to a ribbon-form handle that ends at a petite figure, perhaps a shaman or cazique, who stands atop the other chamber. Holding a hand drum, the standing figure is extensively decorated with applied, stamped, and finely painted details, including an elaborate, horned headdress, round earspools, a beaded, multistrand pectoral, and an expressive visage with face paint. The twin round chambers are both attractively decorated with straight and wavy striped motifs on each flat sides. Blow into the tall spout to produce a lovely, soft whistle. Still produces a soft whistle. Repaired with restoration. Expected nicks, chips, and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with impressive remaining pigments.
