Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A beautiful hand-carved wooden post topped by a finial of a standing lord. He wears a tall headdress and a tunic textured with a zigzag pattern that calls to mind the form of a pyramid. The rest of the post is of an uncomplicated form - long and narrow, pierced regularly by three square mortises for attachment to a litter. Litters were used to carry royalty and other nobility, and in funerary processions four men would carry an empty litter to symbolize the dead. Size: 15.5" L x 1.25" W (39.4 cm x 3.2 cm); 17.5" H (44.4 cm) on included custom stand.
