1864 Lincoln & Johnson Presidential Campaign Cover
November 1st 1864-Dated, Abraham Lincoln & Johnson 1864 Presidential Campaign Cover Pre-Printed to Send Home to His Wife (Walcott Unlisted).
This scarce 1864, 2nd Lincoln Presidential Campaign, Postally Used Cover has an ornate boxed red 3c Washington Stamp (Scott-65) itself in Very Fine quality, tied by "target" cancel upon orange paper on this preprinted Cover from C. W. Benson, Battery "K", 1st Washington Heavy Artillery to his wife in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Postal cancel is by segmented cork, with a faint Washington, D.C. 1/11 cancel. The envelope is slightly reduced at left, where opened. It is clean & attractive, and a scarce Campaign Cover. This soldier knew the rigors of war required that he be efficient with his time as he had his mail ready to be posted to his wife! Charles W. Benson of Christiana, Wisconsin enlisted on 9/7/1864 as a Private. On 9/7/1864 he mustered into "K" Co., WI 1st Heavy Artillery. He was Mustered Out on 6/26/1865. This is one of the most unique 1864 Campaign Covers we have seen... made desirable by unusual usage and lovely presentation. There have been just two other examples from Private Benson in the market, including one in the famed Jarrett Collection.
