  • Description: An old and rare female Awori Ibeji from Ado Odo. The big bare feet form the base of the statue, to which in relation the legs are short and thin, the cluteae are protuberant, the shoulders are broad and strong, the arms form an U turned upside down, the hands are joined to the body at the height of the hips, with the four fingers bent at an angle of about 90 degree, the thumbs are held straight downwards, the breasts are tubular and stand out slightly, the neck is strong and supports a big head. The ears have a typical shape, the mouth has well emphasized lips which are slightly open, the nose is very short with a broad tip, the eyesore elliptical, bordered all around, with the upper lids bulging, slanting outwards on the face, three big horizontal scarifications on each cheek, the hair-style is high and crested. The Ibeji wears a colorful necklace and around the hips two strings of fine black pearls which are said to offer protection from Abiku, the powerful spirit of "children born to die"; remains of camwood between the legs, arms and under the breasts, one crack between the breasts, another one at the left side of the head, dark brown patina, elaborately carved and signs of cultic use.
