The original Indian name translates as "the surrounded", the valley being surrounded by tall peaks. This area is one of the true treasures of the Northern Rockies. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: J. W. RODE) CHIEF KOOSTAHTAN ON THE BANKS OF THE FLATHEAD Original vintage photograph of Chief Koostahtah in full headdress and regalia looking over the Flathead River in NW Montana; 10.75" (h) x 4.5"(w). Undated, but circa 1920's. Title in image's negative. On reverse is the rubber stamp of J. W. Rode; "Scenic Photographs From Yellowstone and Glacier Parks". Koostahtah, became chief and spiritual leader of the Kootenai's after his brother Isaac's death. His tenure as leader of Kootenays spanned 38 years from 1904 to 1942.
