Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. An elegant necklace of a wearable form composed of nine pottery spindle whorl beads. The beads are either spherical, barrel-shaped, or spindle-shaped, and each bears a register of abstract avian creatures on their exterior surfaces. The beads are strung with modern red braided thread with a central ornament with three beads, followed by a pair with two beads, and another pair with one bead. A tenth spindle whorl bead is used as a fastener along with a modern loop. Size (necklace): 18.5" L (47 cm); (largest bead): 0.55" W x 0.4" H (1.4 cm x 1 cm)
Provenance: ex-HDE Enterprise/ Hank Johnson collection, Denver, Colorado before 2000

Condition
Strung in modern times and wearable as shown. Pottery spindle whorl beads are ancient, and red thread is modern. Minor abrasions to some beads, and minor losses to some white pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout. Avian iconography is still visible.
