Julie Hart Beers

Naturalistic depiction of towering birch trees beside a glistening lake illuminated by sunlight. Beers was the sister of two Hudson River School artists, James McDougal Hart and William Hart as well as a prolific artist of her time. Learning to paint from her brothers as well as her husband who was also an artist, Beers became one of the first American born women to gain recognition as an artist. Throughout the second half of the 19th century, Beers's work was widely exhibited throughout the United States including the Boston Athenaeum, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and National Academy of Design. Beers's work conveys the intimacy of the Hudson River and New England's vast landscapes, cementing her as one of the very few prolific female painters of the Victorian era.
