Herbert A. Steinke
(Source: askart.com) Born in Wausau, Wisconsin, Herbert Steinke was a post-impressionist painter whose favorite scenes show farms, lakes and wilderness in the Adirondacks and in the Catskills, near the noted art colony at Woodstock, New York. He lived most of his adult life in Albany, New York, where he spent thirty years as teacher and Director of Art Education for the public school system. During these years he also frequently traveled to Old Lyme, Connecticut, to paint and visit his in-laws, who lived there.

Before settling in upstate New York, Steinke graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Art in 1923 and earned a BFA in 1925 from the Yale University School of Fine Art, where he studied with Eugene Savage. He also taught in a high school in New Haven, and then returned to the Chicago area for a few years. His close friend and mentor, the artist Carl Werntz (1874 - 1944), was the founder and director of the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, and first hired Steinke as art instructor. Steinke took on commercial art commissions as well, and served for a time as Director of the Newman Advertising Agency in Chicago.

Steinke exhibited at numerous solo shows and other venues, including the Albany Institute of History and Art, and won many awards during his long career. His style became distinctive for short dashes of bright color, such as purples and greens in a rural stream, with moderate to strong impasto, and his typical signature was H A Steinke. A lifelong educator, he also wrote several articles on teaching which were published in scholastic magazines.
