FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, First Edition, First Printing, by Ernest Hemingway, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1940. Hardcover octavo, 471 pages with "A" on copyright page, hardbound in publisher's tan cloth with red labels to spine and black lettering to front cover and spine, off white paper doublures and end papers, original price-clipped pictorial dust jacket with Hemingway's portrait, without the photographer's name, wrapped in mylar. 8 3/4" H x 6 1/4" W x 1 3/4" D. Provenance: Purchased from Bauman Rare Books, Philadelphia, PA in November 2001.
Condition
Overall very good condition. Dust jacket is price-clipped, slight wear/creases to edges with minor tears, largest 1/4", to spine. Cover is overall very good condition with corners slightly bumped. Acid burn to paper doublures, pencil inscription to front matter page, pages in overall very good, legible condition with light toning.
