Francis Focer Brown (Indiana/New Jersey, 1891-1971) oil on board Fauvist style painting depicting a group of farmhouses and trees, likely an Indiana landscape, rendered in shades of pink, red and blue, in broad brush strokes. Signed "Francis F Brown" lower center. Artist's name additionally en verso of board. Housed in a Louis XIII style giltwood frame. Sight: 18 1/2" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed: 23 1/2" H x 28 1/4" W. Artist biography: Francis Focer Brown was an Indiana impressionist known for his experimentation with the Fauvist and Expressionist movements. His work, often rendered in bold colors or with nearly formless subject matter, has been compared to that of Charles Burchfield and Vincent Van Gogh. A graduate of the John Herron Art Institute and Ohio State University, Brown studied with members of the Hoosier Salon and exhibited at the Salon, winning several prizes from the 1920s through the 1960s. He also exhibited at the Richmond Art Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Cincinnati Museum of Art, and led the Fine Arts Department at what is now Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
