Ancient Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A lovely fragment of a hand-carved schist relief panel displaying mottled hues of cream, beige, burnt umber, and light gray. The decorations feature a court scene with a regal figure on the righthand side, perhaps a king, seated on a sizable throne and donning an elaborate coiffure as well as flowing vestments as he raises his right hand with an outward-facing palm. To his right is a seated female musician holding a petite instrument and wearing a crosshatched headdress, and to her right is a dancer leaping off one foot with both arms held out in a demonstrative manner. This panel was perhaps one part of a larger figural scene. Size: 13.75" W x 7.875" H (34.9 cm x 20 cm)

Fragment of a larger piece. Expected nicks, chips, abrasions, and loss of detail, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with rich earthen deposits throughout.
