Description
1st item: Miniature portrait of a bearded gentleman, possibly by John Wood Dodge, Tennessee, appears to be a photograph on paper, tinted with watercolor, in an oval gold brooch frame with beaded decoration. Frame tests 14K. Overall: 3 1/8" H x 2 1/2" W (excluding hanger). Second quarter 19th century. Note: John Wood Dodge was one of Tennessee's most prominent miniature portrait painters. As photography became more widespread in the 1850s, he began utilizing that medium, tinting the photographs to add color and visual dimension to the portraits. 2nd item: Mid 19th century ninth plate size Daguerreotype depicting a middle aged man in dark coat and tie, housed in a burlwood case with inlaid mother of pearl floral decoration. 4" H x 3 1/2" W.

Condition: 1st item: Some light scratching to glass and tiny dents to back of frame, light toning to paper, overall very good condition. 2nd item: Considerable wear and losses to case, clouding and oxidation to edges of photograph, 1/4" spot with loss of silvering lower left.
