Frame dimensions 11 7/8 x 15 1/2 in., H 12 in. x W 15 in. x D 1 in.
Joseph Whelden Holmes was a lifelong resident of Tisbury, Dukes County, Massachusetts. Tisbury was incorporated in 1671 and is on Martha's Vineyard, it was originally referred to as "Holmes Hole." Holmes is listed as a merchant in the 1865 census, but also served several elected positions according to local records.
