Description: The smooth, thin paper and the continuous contour lines mark our sheet as a break. The accompanying lettering also differs from authentic signatures of Karel du Jardin in its mixture of block letters and cursive. A similar animal, almost to scale, is depicted in a red chalk drawing by Du Jardin at Harvard. Probably a comparable drawing served the unknown copyist as a model.
The reference to Bloemaert on the reverse could refer to a drawing that was also in the collection of Karl Eduard von Liphart.
Keywords: Mule, travel, pack animal, excursion, Italy trip, 18th century, Baroque, Animals, Netherlands, donkey
Size: 14.2 cm x 14.7 cm (5.6 x 5.8 in)
Condition: Rather good condition. Somewhat browned and stained, slightly wavy, remains of old mounting on verso.
