Description
14x20" original first printing poster on stiff paper. This is first version w/gold in diamond-shaped bkg. instead of later yellow printings. ©1967 Berkeley Bonaparte. Poster art by Rick Griffin features marijuana leaves, joints, rolling papers, bags of marijuana and large central can marked "Can-A-Blis," a subtle play on the scientific name of marijuana - Cannabis. Poster text reads "Can-A-Blis - Pipe & Cigarette Tobacco/Guaranteed Not To Bite The Tongue, And To Give Pleasure."
Artist Rick Griffin created a lot of concert posters for the Avalon and Fillmore Ballrooms. But he also made other art at the same time. One of the topics he created numerous pieces on was the virtues of smoking cannabis. Here is one of the best known as " Can-a-blis", which is a play on the words cannabis and bliss and looking just like an actual trademark brand. He was only 50 years early. This is the rare original first print with the gold background not yellow as pictured in the Art of Rock book on page 238 plate 2.360. Measures 14 1/16" X 20". This poster is in near mint/mint condition with only the tiniest bit of handling.
