Significant double-page map showing transitional western borders including the important territorial acquisitions of the Mexican-American War, pre-Gadsden Purchase. The inset map "No. 6 Map of the Gold Region of California" delineates the Gold Regions, naming Sutter's Buttes, Sacramento City, and all of the important creeks of the gold region feeding into the Sacramento and Feather Rivers. The territories of Oregon and Washington extend to the Continental Divide. Minnesota Territory includes part of the Dakotas and Nebraska Territory encompasses what will become the eastern parts of Montana and Wyoming, as well as most of the Dakotas. Utah is in a large configuration and includes most of Nevada and the western half of Colorado. The Territory of New Mexico is shown in a horizontal format, also including the future Arizona, lower tip of Nevada and a portion of southeastern Colorado. Approximately three dozen Indian tribe locations shown in the western part of the country. Important regional notations shown, such as â€œCopper Region” in upper Wisconsin, â€œGreat American Desert” at the east of the lower Rocky Mountains, and â€œThe Bad Lands” in Nebraska Territory.
