“Destruction of San Francisco by Earthquake and Fire, April 18, 1906,” by Francis Ficke. This is an extremely scarce print, especially in original color. The same print in black is also scarce (one is currently available on a competing site) but the color ones are quite valuable, and can range into many thousands of dollars. This image is a rare record of the city in the early 20th century (every building shown was destroyed by the fire). Lithograph/chromolithograph published 1906 by Louis Roesch Co. The black color has been applied through the lithographic printing process. This is an unusual print, though, because the other colors have been applied using chromolithography, a sophisticated and tedious process where the graphic artist must create a separate stone plate for each different color. Chromolithographs require the exact positioning (or registration) of each separate color, and then the entire run must be printed with that one color, then repeating the process with each separate color.
