"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (first published on July 4, 1865) - originally published as "Alice's Adventures Under Ground". The story centers on the seven-year-old Alice, who falls asleep in a meadow, and dreams that she plunges down a rabbit hole. She finds herself first too large and then too small. She meets such strange characters as Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the King and Queen of Hearts, and experiences wondrous, often bizarre adventures, trying to reason in numerous discussions that do not follow the daylight logic. Finally, she loses her temper, bringing down this dream world and wakes up.

The working title of Alice's new adventures was 'Looking-Glass House'. It evolved to 'Behind the Looking-Glass', but eventually Henry Liddon suggested 'Through the Looking-Glass' and the subtitle 'And What Alice Found There' was added. The 'wrong-way-round idea' dominates the book, because this kind of game was a favorite of Dodgson's. He liked to write letters in mirror-writing, drew pictures which changed into different ones when held upside down, and he also liked to play his musical boxes backwards. Some people think that this has something to do with his left-handedness. This sequel, "Through the Looking Glass and what Alice found there" was first published in December 1871 (but was dated 1872).

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), (pseudonym of English writer and mathematician, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) is best known for his enduring classics "Alice in Wonderland" (1865) and "Through the Looking Glass" (1875).

Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) was an English illustrator. He drew many topical cartoons and caricatures for 'Punch' in the late 19th century, but is best remembered today for his illustrations for Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass"

Edwin John Prittie (1879-1963) was an American Illustrator of children's books and classics for the John C. Winston publishing company of Philadelphia between the years 1906 and 1932. He was also the exclusive cover artist for Comfort Magazine of Augusta Maine throughout the 1930's. He ended his illustrating career as primary artist on Gum Inc.'s "Horrors of War" and "Lone Ranger" series chewing gum cards 1938-1942. His works are signed: E.J.P., EJP as a monogram in a circle, E.J. Prittie, Edwin J. Prittie, and Edwin John Prittie.

During his tenure with Winston, Prittie illustrated text and reference books, 14 major works and classics, and numerous youth series. His credits include Edward Ellis' boys' adventures, the Twighlight Animal Series (i.e. Geo. Walsh's "Bumper the Rabbit" books), and the classics Alice In Wonderland '23, Robin Hood '23, Black Beauty '27, Joan Of Arc '30, and Gulliver's Travels '30.
