Description
"Marcus, a Novel of the Youngest Apostle" by Laurene Chambers Chinn, published by William Morrow, New York, 1965, unstated first edition.
Hard boards, original bright orange cloth spine with gilt lettering; 5.1/2" x 8.1/4"; barred name on the front endpaper, 370 pages on nice cream-orange paper, very good condition.
The first novel to tell the real story of the origins of the Christian Church from the point of view of St. Mark. Based on research into the period of the Gospel story, this is Chinn's first book dealing with New Testament history. It is a story of the early church during the period of formation from the crucifixion to the death of Peter.
"Author of chronologically the first Gospel, Marcus (John Mark) was a singularly intimate observer of every crucial event affecting the very early Church. Traditionally he was the only witness to Christ's agony in Gethsemane - this at the age of fourteen. His mother's house was the scene of Pentecost. He traveled with both Paul and Peter - with Paul on Cyprus, for example, and with Peter in Rome, where he witnessed Peter's crucifixion. Thereafter, he undertook his own independent ministry in Alexandria. All of these events, spanning the years 30-65 A.D. and affecting the entire Mediterranean world - plus the tender story of Marcus's slowly burgeoning love for his adoptive sister, Rhoda - Mrs Chinn has woven into a novel of great perception and narrative power."
