Description
dovetailed and lipped drawers, interior construction with rosehead nails throughout, yellow pine secondary, 43-1/2 x 70-1/4 x 26-1/2 in. Large central drawer was formerly fitted as a cellaret drawer, and is now lacking interior dividers, several drawer runners flipped and some replaced, old refinishing, some burns and stains, losses and minor surface flaws throughout, several screws added and/or reset for top, probably original brass pulls. Provenance: Family history indicates that this huntboard descended from Marcellis Garnet Saunders of "Rosemont" in Loretto, Virginia. Saunders is listed in Lee's Lieutenants, and was the son of R. D. Saunders, but earlier genealogy is not clear. Loretto is on the Rappahannock River, just south of Port Royal. A very closely related huntboard with similar design and distinctive corner brackets has a history of descent in the Cook family of "Church Hill" near Ware Church and Gloucester, southeast of Loretto. Henry Saunders of Loudoun County owned the house "Rock Hill", formerly known as "Rosemont" in the 19th century, and may be a relation of the Saunders' "Rosemont" in Loretto. A Pembroke table with similar brackets is also known, and is attributed to Tidewater Virginia (MESDA file NN-1708).
