Pre-Columbian, southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. A beautiful necklace comprised of 78 hand-carved greenstone beads of varying sizes in mottled hues of sage, forest, cream, pistachio, mint, and laurel. The beads are more petite nearest to the terminals and gradually increase in size towards the middle, and the center bead is of an apple-shaped form. Beneath the largest bead is an abstract head pendant with minimalist features including a pair of drilled eyes, a crested nose and brow, a tapered mandible, and a string-cut mouth. Wearable as shown and strung in modern times. Greenstone beads and face pendant are ancient; stringing is modern. Repair to chin area of face pendant, with light adhesive residue along break lines; all beads are intact and very good. Minor nicks and abrasions to some beads. Nicely mottled coloration throughout. Note: necklace strand is not adjustable without untying the knot, so please take note of the size.
