Item Details
Description
William Joseph "Bill" Freeman (American, 1927-2012). "Touch of Rain" oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. Signed on the lower left. A beautiful landscape painting depicting a herd of bison roaming across the golden plains with a majestic mountain range in the distance, all below a sublime Western sky with " a touch of rain" contributing to the drama of the atmosphere. All is painted in a gorgeous palette of mauve, lavender, sage, teal, gold, periwinkle, and azure hues - with earthtones to delineate the bison. Freeman's painting is executed in his signature style with sophisticated impasto and brushwork techniques. A wonderful view of the American West inhabited by some of its iconic animals. Did you know that America's bison's ancestors came from southern Asia about 400,000 years ago? They crossed the land bridge that once joined Asia and North America during the Pliocene Epoch! While today's bison are impressive for their size, according to fossil records, the prehistoric bison were much larger, with horns that measured 9 feet from tip to tip! Size: 15.875" L x 24" W (40.3 cm x 61 cm)

Bill Freeman grew up in West Texas on a farm just outside of El Paso. Interestingly, he worked as a horse wrangler, fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a field researcher and guide for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for twelve years in Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico prior to becoming an artist. It was not until the age of 30 that Freeman decided to become an artist specializing in Western landscapes. Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
