Item Details
Description
Native American, United States, Archaic to Woodland period, ca. 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. A great collection of 13 hand-knapped stone projectile points and tools made from chert and obsidian. The chert blades are a variety of forms exhibiting bifacial petaloid shapes with or without notched fins and stemmed necks - ideal for hafting to wooden shafts as spears or arrows. The 3 largest in the collection are a stemmed spear head with a broad, flattened blade and an ovoid chert blade with a sharpened edge around the entire periphery. The black obsidian blade is an impressive and large lanceolate point with a flattened cross section, excavate blade, and straight base. Obsidian comes from volcanic sources that span from the pacific northwest along the western coast to Mexico and Latin America and regarded as a precious material that could flake to razor sharp edges - indeed surgeons today still use obsidian tools today for their precise and fine surfaces! Size (obsidian blade): 6.25" L x 2.5" W (15.9 cm x 6.4 cm); (case): 14.125" L x 12.125" W (35.9 cm x 30.8 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
