Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Dayak, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a large hand-carved wooden hampatong representing an ancestral figure standing upon an integral cylindrical pedestal. The hampatong has great signs of age and weathering, the abraded surface worn from years spent outside watching over a field or household. The stylized person consists of an integral cylindrical base and a tall slender form standing with legs apart with a narrow torso and arms just visible at the sides that curve inward over the abdominal area. Figures like this are thought to ward off evil spirits and thus protect a village, and were placed outside, as exemplified by the weathering and patina on this piece! Size: 7" Diameter x 67" H (17.8 cm x 170.2 cm); 68" H (172.7 cm) on included custom stand.

The word hampatong comes from the Dayak word patong which means statue. Most hampatong figures portray ancestors and supernatural guardians from the Dayak religious system and these guardians are believed to prevent evil spirits, especially those bringing illness from entering the community. hampatongs also serve as temporary homes for the spirits of the deceased, where they briefly stay before beginning their journey to the afterlife. Each one has its own specific purpose, as they all represent specific ancestral spirits or deities.

#168504
Condition
Losses as shown from old inactive insect activity and from exposure to elements. The head and torso have the most areas of loss and splintering, with exposed interior and deep cavities. Nice patina from this weathering and the pedestal is intact enough to support the figure.
