Provenance: (By repute) Dave Hennen Morris (1872- 1944) and Alice Vanderbilt Shepard Morris (1874Ă¢â‚¬â€œ1950), of New York; by descent to Dave Hennen Morris Jr., of New York; by descent to Dave Hennen Morris 3rd; his widow Hazel Morris. Note: There are 18 recorded paintings by Buttersworth depicting the America's Cup Sloops/1886 Races in which the British Galatea faced the defending American Mayflower.
Literature: See R.J. Schaefer, J.E. Buttersworth: 19th-Century Marine Painter, Mystic, Connecticut,1975, p. 235, no. 10, a possible match; and p. 209 for illustration of a companion painting, Mayflower Leading Galatea Around the Lightship.
