Title: Shona Sculpture from Artwell Chipiri

Description:Hand carved soapstone bust, signed Artwell Chipiri. Shona artists continue to work using traditional tools and methodology. It enables the sculptors to form a closer relationship with the stone they are carving, each of which have different properties. In a raw state many of the stones are very nondescript in appearance, rather like uncut diamonds but in the hands of a skilled carver the inner beauty in a myriad of different colours and natural striations is revealed. Sometimes the sculptor will leave some of the original surface of the stone providing extra textural contrasts. Artwell was born in Harare in 1972, After finishing school at the age of 19, he was inspired to become a stone sculptor by Simon Chiseko. Artwell says, “With the visual powers I possess, I feel that life gives me the scope for my powers and emotions… With the concepts of excellence and perfection in my heart, I am sure I will reach great heights.” Artwell’s work has been displayed at galleries in Zimbabwe, Germany, South Korea and the United States amongst others.
