Description
Sevres' Porcelain and Gilt-Bronze-Mounted Urn and Cover, Late Nineteenth Century. Painted on the front with a nymph carrying a pair of doves resting on a floral garland entwined in a drapery swag, accompanied by a pair of putti, signed "C.(harles) LABARRE," and on the reverse with a fire burning in a smokey arcadian garden, each within burnished and chased gilt borders edged with foliate sprays and arabesques, all reserved on a blue ground, each loop handle ending in a classical mask terminal within berried ivy leaves, raised on the square base hung with drapery swags flanked by tassels, raised on "toupie" feet, painted spurious interlaced L'S and dot mark in blue enamel under the cover.H: 28.125 in., W: 8.5 in., D: 8.5 in.The renowned painter Charles Lebarre (French, d. 1906) was active In both England and France during the 1890s, employed at Doulton Burslem and Sevres. He is especially recognized for his allegorical and Neoclassical scenes, inspired from antique imaginary. Charles Labarre is also recorded as a painter at Doulton & Co., and his monumental exhibition pieces 'The Dante Vase' and 'The Love Vase' were shown at the Chicago Columbian Exposition of 1893. A pair of vases, also painted by Labarre and with the same gilt-bronze mounts was sold Christie's, New York, October 24, 2006, lot 208.
