Item Details
Description
“The [rebels are] a dirty, filthy, greasy-looking set of devils. I saw Stonewall Jackson and he looks as bad as the common soldier. You could not tell that he was a general.” -Anthony Gardner Graves, Jr.
This historic and detailed four page Battle of Second Bull Run letter was penned by Anthony Gardner Graves, Jr. (1840-1930) who served in the 44th New York Volunteer Infantry—sometimes called “Ellsworth Avengers.”  In the letter, Graves describes being taken prisoner, gruesome details of battle and its aftermath, and a very rare description of General "Stonewall" Jackson, who Graves ostensibly saw after he was taken prisoner.
