Description
2nd century BC-1st century AD. A terracotta head modelled as a mature woman with voluminous dressed hair propoloma, naturalistically formed facial features, fleshy chin, high cheeks, roman nose, almond-shaped eyes and pierced ears; mounted on a clear stand containing a laser-engraved bicycle. Cf. Dunand, F., Religion populaire en Égypte romaine: les terres cuites isiaques du Musée du Caire Leiden, 1979, no.70; Savvopoulos, K., 'Popular divine imagery in Hellenistic and Roman Alexandria. The terracotta figurines collection of the Patriarchal Sacristy in Alexandria' in The Annual of the British School at Athens 2019, pp.1-52, figs 43, 44, 45. 255 grams total, 94mm high (13.3cm including stand) (3 3/4 (5 1/4)"). Private collection, acquired 1990s. London, UK, art market. Property of a Sussex, UK, teacher. The head is with all probability pertinent to votive statuettes made in Alexandria's workshops and exported for the cult of the Egyptian gods and divinities in the Mediterranean. The material with whom these votive offerings were realised seems to be a medium clay with inclusions of brown silt fabric. Noteworthy is the rich and enormous female coiffure, arranged in thick plokamoi supporting a rich propoloma that crowns the domina's head. [No Reserve]
