Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE; Near East, Persia, Late Sassanian, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A fabulous pair of leaded-bronze items comprised of a Roman lion statuette and a Sassanian oil ladle. The lion is mold cast, and solid, standing on fused legs and head slightly down and forward. This beast is underfed; note his narrow body, incised to create a ribcage, and around his neck is a collar. The vessel is a petite ladle form with a hemispherical bowl that rests on three applied nub feet. The lip has three tabs and a narrow spout with a shallow groove for pouring the oil from the bowl into a lamp. A dark patina envelops the surface of both lion and oil ladle. Size of lion: 2.5" L x 0.65" W x 1.3" H (6.4 cm x 1.7 cm x 3.3 cm); oil vessel: 3.35" L x 2.25" W x 1" H (8.5 cm x 5.7 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s
