"The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", by Daniel Defoe, with 100 Illustrations by Edward H. Wehnert. Published by George Bell and Sons, York Street, Covent Garden, London, 1879.
Hard boards, original embossed blue cloth, black decorations on both boards, gold decorations on spine [spine ends wear, spine fading- bright fade line on spine: see photos]; 5.1/2" x 8"; gift inscription ['Florence Kirk from her father, Easter 1880'] on the back of the frontispiece [frontispiece has an old dump stain]; 328 pages + over 20 plates on heavy paper; overall 100 text illustrations and plates, c.20 pages in the middle are slightly longer at the bottom, very little soiling, very good condition.
Edward Henry Wehnert (1813-1868) was an English painter of landscape, genre and historical subjects, best remembered for his illustrations in books and magazine. Among the many for which he furnished the drawings were Grimm's Fairy Tales (1853); Keats's Eve of St. Agnes (1856); Coleridge's Ancient Mariner (1857); The Pilgrim's Progress (1858); Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales (1861); Robinson Crusoe (1862); and Edgar Allan Poe's Poetical Works (1865).
