Description
"Gone with the Wind" by Margaret Mitchell, First Edition published by the Macmillan Company, New York, June 1936. 1st official printing with "Published June 1936" without any other printings listed on the copyright page. [The book was first published in May 1936, then the May printing was recalled, and the book was officially issued in June 1936].
This particular copy is connected with the film premiere of the Gone with the Wind, the 'GWW Festival' which took place in Atlanta, Georgia in December 1939. The inscription on the front endpaper states, "Presented to George A. Bado by Betty Hamilton and read by the people of Atlanta during the G.w.t.W. festival. May- 1940." There is a blind stamp on the title page "Carnegie Library, Atlanta Georgia."
Apparently, in May 1940, the book was already discarded from the library and given to George Bado. The used condition of this book makes it believable that "it was read by the people of Atlanta."
The GWTW festivities in December 1939 continued for three days. After the official greeting of the film crew and actors at the airport of Atlanta, 'Gone with the Wind' parade took through the streets of Atlanta. The reporters and news cameramen filmed large crowds of people awaiting the parade to celebrate the premiere of the film in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The facade of the Loew's Grand Theater was redecorated to resemble O'Hara home from the movie. 2000 invited guests attended the premier. In his speech, Clark Gable stated that, "I am just a spectator like you who came to watch the movie. It is a Margarette Mitchell night, and people of Atlanta night." Margarette Mitchell, who was also present at the premiere, refused to talk upfront the running cameras. The 'Gone With the Wind Ball' held at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium in downtown Atlanta on December 4, 1939 was a "The social highlights of the festivities." Governors from neighboring states, political, financial and Hollywood elites participated in the 'Old South’ fashioned ball, in which the couples were dressed in the 1860s costumes. For a few days Atlanta was in the center of the nationwide news coverage. The celebration was widely covered in the media, and shown in the newsreels in the cinemas as well.
The facsimile [copy] of the first state dust jacket is protected by the mylar cover. Original hard boards, Confederate-gray cloth [wear: see photos]; ca. 6" x 8.1/2", cut-outs from the flaps of the original dust jacket and an ink inscription on the front endpaper, title page fold, 1037 pages [all pages are present, heavy soiling and wear [see photos]; a few page corner folds, fair / good condition. See photos.
A Civil War Saga:
"The stirring drama of the Civil War and Reconstruction is brought vividly to life in this really magnificent novel...
The story epitomizes the whole drama of the South under the impact of War and its aftermath. The ruggedness and strength of north Georgia's red hills are in the characters -- gruff and blustering, Gerald O'Hara; Ellen, his wife; Mammy, who both loved and chastened Ellen's daughters; the rollicking Tarleton twins; stately John Wilkes, and a host of others forming a rich picture of Southern life."
