Item Details
Description
A carved wooden effigy of a mother and child wearing a ritual cap and what appears as a colonial era shirt, carved teeth and well handled surface patina. Traditionally phemba are used to symbolise the fertility of the whole community. Phemba figures are also more recently used in women’s fertility cults to honour maternal spirits. Yombe peoples, DRC/ Congo, Africa, The sculpture measures 11.25 inches tall ( 13 inches tall on wooden base). Provenance: Jack Oliver collection, Marseilles, France.

Fair, loss to one ear, loss to toes of child, well worn.
