Stonewall Jackson Signed Huge Diploma, Awarded to Cadet McKinney, With Additional Example
A pair of diplomas, issued to Cadet Robert M. McKinney upon his graduation from the Virginia Military Institute, one being signed by Stonewall Jackson. Both are printed on vellum and have minor chipping and insect damage, along with toning and soiling at the edges. Both have clean cuts at the top and bottom margins where a ribbon might have been attached, and both were previously rolled. Overall very good.
The first document is a Virginia Military Institute Diploma signed by then-professor Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. 1p partially printed, measuring 15.25" x 20", Lexington, Virginia, dated July 4, 1856. Awarded to Cadet R.M. McKinney of Campbell County and signed by "T.J. Jackson Prof." along with other faculty and board members. Decorated with military vignettes.
The second document is a Virginia Dialectic Society of Cadets Diploma. 1p partially printed, measuring 23" x 17", Virginia, dated July 4, 1856. Awarded to Cadet R.M. McKinney, the diploma is printed in French and signed by the society's president and secretary. Decorated with an illustrated view of the institution. SIgned by his classmates on verso.
Thomas J. Jackson (1824-1863) was hired to teach at the Virginia Military Institute in 1851, taking the newly created position of Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy, or Physics, and Instructor of Artillery. Jackson was not a popular teacher and in 1856, the same year McKinney graduated, a group of alumni tried to have Jackson removed. Robert M. McKinney (1835-1862) became a Commandant and French Professor at North Carolina Military Academy after graduating. When the war broke out, he was made Captain of Company A of the 6th North Carolina Infantry. He was killed during a skirmish at Lee's Mill in April 1862 at the age of 27.
