E. Fermi, Italian Physicist, Signed 1939 Letter
FERMI, ENRICO. Typed Letter Signed, "E. Fermi", 1p, in Italian, on Columbia University / Physics Department letterhead, 8" x 10.5", New York City, January 25, 1939. Beautifully matted (removable) together with an 8" x 10" black and white glossy photo of Fermi to a size of 16.5" x 11.5". COA from Markus Brandes Autographs, includes transcription and translation to English. The letter has expected mailing folds, some creasing and minor wear, else Fine.
Fermi writes to Gabriella Bosano at the Wellesley College Department of Italian, translated to English, in full, "Thank you for your letters. I don't think I could go to Boston on the 27th. I would therefore like to come to Wellesley on February 17th and, if need be, postpone the Historical Society to another time."
Enrico Fermi (1901-1954) was an Italian physicist and the creator of the world's first nuclear reactor, the Chicago Pile-1. He has been called the "architect of the nuclear age". Fermi was one of very few physicists to excel in both theoretical physics and experimental physics. He was awarded the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on induced radioactivity by neutron bombardment and for the discovery of transuranium elements. Fermi made significant contributions to the development of statistical mechanics, quantum theory, and nuclear and particle physics.
