Roman Glass Jar Squat Form
Roman Glass Jar Squat Form
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A striking vessel of a squat form that is free-blown from semi-translucent glass of a rich blue-green hue with a dense base and a rough pontil scar, a gently corseted neckline, and a cylindrical neck that gradually expands and flares to form the rim. Thin layers of silvery iridescence have formed across the vessel and nicely complement its vibrant turquoise color. Size: 1.9" W x 2" H (4.8 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private A.G. collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

#156583
Condition
Abrasions and light encrustations across lid, body, and base, with one chip and light pitting to rim, and several stable hairline fissures and micro-bubbling within glass matrix, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Light earthen deposits and iridescence throughout.
