Roman Glass Ingot Great Iridescence
Roman Glass Ingot Great Iridescence
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A circular glass ingot with sloping peripheries, a bulging hemispherical boss in the center, and a slightly concave underside. Raw glass ingots were essential in creating the exquisite glass works known throughout the Roman Empire. Finer sand made for higher-quality glass were made into ingots and transported to Rome, with some of the best ingots originating in what is now Cologne, Germany. This ingot is covered in fiery layers of rainbow-hued iridescence which nicely complements the darkened hues of the glass. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 2.75" W x 0.8" H (7 cm x 2 cm).
