Vintage United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation Semper Fidelis coin /token. Such USMC tokens were given to the Marines that volunteer, as well as companies and individuals that participate or donate. The brass coin shows a Teddy Bear in Marine uniform and lettering, "Every Child Deserves a Little Christmas." The lettering on the reverse has a USMC insignia and "United States Marine Corp. Semper Fidelis." C.1950s-1970s.
The brass coin is c. 1" across [44mm]; very good condition.
Toys for Tots is a charitable organization founded in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks, a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve officer. MAJ Hendricks was inspired by his wife who wanted to donate a homemade Raggedy Ann doll to a needy child in the Los Angeles are but could not find an organization that could help. The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.
